Daystar University Nairobi run two day training event
In October a team from Daystar University, Nairobi visited Patmos School and conducted a two day training event focused on Child Protection in the interest of safeguarding the school children from violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect. The target group for this training was Patmos School teachers and social workers.
The event ran from the 4th – 6th October 2021. There were 4 sessions on each of the two days, two in the morning and two in the afternoon and the sessions comprised of lectures as well as practical sessions. A total of 20 staff attended this training event. The morning sessions were attended by both teachers and social workers but the afternoon classes were separate so as to equip both teams with the skills and knowledge to carry out their respective day to day roles.
There were three facilitators who were well equipped to carry out this training and the lessons were designed to be interactive using learning materials where appropriate.
The group were taught about the importance of Play Therapy which is a form of therapy primarily for children. Some children may not be able to process their own emotions or articulate problems to parents or other adults, therefore play therapy can help children to open up and express different emotions through the play activities. Training in play therapy will help the social workers in managing difficult challenges that the children face both at home and at school.
After each lesson and in the evening after the sessions had concluded, there were practical sessions to help reinforce what had been taught. This helped the staff to better understand what they had learnt as well as how to put that training into practice.
After the successful completion of the training, the teachers and social workers were subsequently each awarded a certificate on Child Protection at a special graduation ceremony which was held at Patmos School on 16th October, 2021. Lecturers from Daystar University were present at this event to congratulate the staff and to present them with their certificates. There was a special cake as well as other refreshments to celebrate the ocasion.
The Patmos School Founder and Director, Richard Wanjala Manya, was present at the graduation ceremony and he gave a speech praising the staff on their achievement and on becoming Champions of Child Protection.
